The aim of your CV is simply to gain an interview. Employers will use your CV as a base of knowledge, giving them an insight into your potential for the role.
Once, invited for interview, it is then that you can show the employer how you are the best person for the job, you have the skills, knowledge and experience to fulfil the job role and you would make a positive addition to their workforce.
In order to get to the interview stage, it may be useful to use the tips below to ensure your CV portrays the right picture of you to prospective employers:
- Make yourself stand out from the crowd - use a good quality paper that is either white or pastel cream. If you wish, you could include a front page and bind your CV for that highly professional look!
- Make sure your CV is personal, reflects your character, and is clear and concise.
- Ensure it is no longer than 2 sides of A4; 3 sides maximum.
- Highlight the skills that you have acquired through your work experience but also through your interest and any voluntary work
- Always check your spelling, this is important as first impressions count.
- Keep a copy of your CV for reference.
- Make sure you account for any employment gaps.
- Do not under sell yourself - make sure that you demonstrate your achievements.
- Do not include too much information, but use a covering letter to outline your career aims.
- Include educational subject areas/modules relevant to the job role
- If you have had a job before, always place jobs in chronological order (starting with the most recent), and give the dates you were there.
- Include a personal profile but gain advice on the content before you place it on your CV.
Good Luck and remember that you have the opportunity to control their perception of you and your suitability for the job role.
What do you like them to say or think whenever they see or hear your name?
